What is Yoga Therapy?

The International Association of Yoga Therapy defines Yoga Therapy as the professional application of the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals and small groups.

Yoga therapy uses the tools of yoga to encourage and empower an individual to be an active participant in improving their own well being. Possible tools used in the session can be but not limited to movement, breath work, meditation, exploring lifestyle, and relaxation techniques.

Yoga Therapy is also beneficial for a wide range of issues including but not limited to:

Body: joint pain, back pain, muscular skeletal issues, arthritis, sciatica, asthma, blood pressure, COPD, fibromayalgia, IBS, Pregnancy, Cancer, Peri/Menopause, auto-immune conditions, MS/ME, cardiovascular issues, respiratory issues, COVID recovery

Mind: stress, anxiety, low mood/depression, post-natal depression, grief

Yoga therapy is being supported through research showing the therapeutic benefits of yoga therapy for a wide range of conditions effecting our well being by relief of symptoms experienced or enhancing our sense of well being whilst living with chronic or short term conditions.

Testimonials

Things I found beneficial from yoga therapy were:being listened to, being respected, being looked after, having a practice that is just for me, learning about what my body can do, learning how I can help myself emotionally and physically. Diana was very thorough, intuitive, understanding, and respectful of what my needs were physically and emotionally.

Yoga Therapy Student — stress, anxiety, and recovering from cardiovascular issues

Diana is warm, kind, and a good listener. She is boundaried and professional. She takes time and care explaining things. Diana is receptive and flexible to my feedback, taking into account my verbal feedback and responsive to what she asked me to do. She checks in throughout the session. I feel in very safe hands.

Yoga Therapy Student — anxiety and stress

It was such hard work breathing after having COVID and I felt tired all the time. The breathing and restorative yoga practices we did really benefitted me. I was skeptical at first but found this gentle stretching around the chest and back really made it easier to breath over time. You didn’t force me to do things I didn’t want to do and it felt like you really listened to me.

Thank you so much for the session today. I’ve felt much better all day. You created such a safe environment to speak freely–I felt really held and safe. I look forward to doing the practices we put together.

Yoga Therapy Student- anxiety, trauma, shoulder pain

What I appreciate about our sessions is you create a safe place for me to explore things about myself. I have looked at things I didn’t even realise were effecting me. The use of meditation and movement has helped me so much. You provided me with resources that help me to understand the things we are working on and this is really helpful.

Yoga therapy client, chronic stress/burnout/anxiety

You really helped me with my lower back pain. I couldn’t hardly move when we began the session and in one session I was able to move more than I had in over a week. The practices you gave for me to do at home really helped to continue the progress we made. I feel so much better and now have things to do if it happens again.

And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. … When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.
